The FIFA World Cup was started in 1930 with Uruguay winning the inaugural edition. Alberto Suppici was Uruguay’s manager and first manager to win the world cup.
FUN FACT: Vittorio Pozzo is the only manager to have won the FIFA World Cup twice. Pozzo won the 1934 and 1938 world cups with Italy.
Twenty different managers have won the FIFA World Cup. There have been five managers who have managed to win the world cup and have ended runners up once.
Juan Lopez Fontana took Uruguay to world cup glory in 1950. With this, Fontana became the first manager to win a world cup without having a prior professional football career.
Mario Zagallo (as a player in 1958 and 1962, as a manager in 1970), Franz Beckenbauer (as a player in 1974, as a manager in 1990) and Didier Deschamps (as a player in 1998, as a manager in 2018) are only three managers to have won the world cup both as players and as managers. To add to that, Beckenbauer and Deschamps were also captains of their respective teams when they won the FIFA World cup as a player.
